What can MOTECH do for Subject Matter Experts?

As we mention in the MOTECH Learning Curve, MOTECH is a diverse platform that can do many things. It’s like your local jack-of-all-trades who can look at a problem, pull from a diverse skillset and do a good job. If you want to interact directly with patients through IVR and SMS, MOTECH can do that. If you want to train frontline workers through the phone, MOTECH can do that. If you want to integrate with an open source system like OpenMRS, CommCare or DHIS2, MOTECH can do that too. These diverse capabilities make setup challenging for anyone who wishes to use the MOTECH platform. We understand this and are starting a series of blog posts and improved documentation designed for subject matter experts.

What is the MOTECH platform?

The MOTECH platform is a modular information system that can help you achieve your health outcomes. MOTECH has a core set of capabilities which can be extended by adding modules. The configuration is nearly limitless. MOTECH has been used in many situations to help SMEs collect information in remote environments, communicate with patients through automated voice calls and SMS as well as train frontline workers. MOTECH also has the ability to automatically communicate with other health systems. You identify your outcomes, link them to data needs and load the appropriate modules.

What has MOTECH been used for in the past?

The MOTECH platform has been used to:

  • interact with pregnant women to assist with their prenatal care
  • provide training to frontline workers through an interactive voice system
  • extend the care of HIV and TB patients from the clinic to their homes offering pill reminder and tracking through their mobile phone.
  • connect clinic and mobile phone systems to government public health systems

As mentioned above, each of these cases has focused on strengthening the health system and added to the capability of MOTECH. MOTECH is open source which means that everyone can contribute to the system. For example, if one organization creates a module, they can share it with others. That’s one of the reasons we have so many features.

How do I get started?

We provide access to a demo server, but it’s a generic installation that shows the basics of the MOTECH platform. It’s likely that you have a workflow in mind. If that’s the case, send us a message and our program managers will work with you. Our team has experience with many systems across the mHealth spectrum and will get you started.

Next, we’re going to get in to some details on how to structure implementations and provide real examples by showing how to structure an immunization registry with MOTECH. Welcome to our new site!

Thanks for visiting! The past few months have been incredibly busy for the MOTECH team. We made a few major revisions to the MOTECH platform, including creating MOTECH Data Services which is a new relational database system that automatically manages the tables for you. We have improved the installation process and continually work to add systems with which MOTECH connects.

Today, we have launched our new website. We’re working through the process of improving MOTECH’s public presence. This new site features new information about the MOTECH platform, a demo of the most recent build and this blog as an outlet for communicating with our users. We look forward to keeping you up to date through these channels as our platform improves.

TAMA, Urban India

The Treatment Advice by Mobile Alerts program in urban India is a partnership between Grameen Foundation and Johnson & Johnson. This project aims to increase the appointment and treatment adherence for patients on anti-retroviral regimens.

IVR calls are made to HIV-positive patients reminding them of appointment and pill times. Patients can report their adherence with pill regimens or indicate they aren’t able to take their medicine. Patients with side effect symptoms can get feedback on what to do about them so they can continue their treatment. Nurses have a web-based tool which allows them to view patient adherence data and input/view patient medical data.

Mobile Technology for Community Health
